The Smartvine Story

The idea behind Smartvine is simple - that what you drink is just as important as what you eat. Smartvine is the first and only wine of its kind. It’s certified vegan, paleo- and keto-friendly. The Beginning

How does such a good wine come to be? A former Olympic-level gymnast, Christine Fitzgerald spent the first 20 years of her career as a Certified Nutritionist giving clients bad news - no matter how hard they worked during the day, they couldn’t unwind with a glass of wine at night. “The current wine selection on retail shelves had undisclosed amounts of sugar, chemicals, and additives. If my clients drank wine, it would erase all of the hard work they were putting into their diets and exercise”, Christine says. But after two decades, Christine had had enough of being a “very mean nutritionist.”  Instead of telling clients they couldn’t drink wine, she decided to create a wine they could enjoy, a wine that took their health just as seriously as she did. In 2018, Christine partnered with expert viticulturist and award-winning winemaker Steve Clifton, of the renowned Brewer-Clifton Winery. Shortly after, the Smartvine brand was born (and, in October of that year, so was Christine’s daughter). 

Better Grapes = Better Wine

Horrified by the levels of toxic chemicals and pesticides present in most vineyards, new Mom Christine decided that the only way to make the wine properly was to grow the grapes herself. After scouring the California coastline and testing dozens of vineyards, she found one of the few truly organic vineyards, left untreated with chemical pesticides like glyphosate, the toxic weed killer in RoundUp. Today, this Santa Barbara vineyard produces all of the organic grapes for Smartvine wine, the only grapes in the world that are lab tested and certified 100% glyphosate free. Growing organic grapes is only part of the story, though. 

100% Additive Free

Most commercial wines, even “healthy” ones, are legally allowed to contain as many as 72 different chemicals without needing to disclose this to consumers. To ensure a more uniform product, many winemakers add chemical dyes or concentrates like “Mega Purple” and “Ultra Red” to their wines - additives that contain up to 68% sugar and homogenize the wine’s taste. This adulteration is something most winemakers don’t want to discuss, let alone print on a label. Even organic wines can be filtered through animal byproducts like gelatine, chitin (crustacean shells), bone marrow, milk casein, and egg whites. Instead, Smartvine uses only 100% organic diatomaceous earth, a natural, renewable vegan filtering agent, making Smartvine one of the few wines that is Certified Vegan. Many conventional wines also contain arsenic levels three to five times higher than the EPA’s allowable limit. This just wouldn’t work for a health-conscious Mom, so the Smartvine team developed a process that didn’t rely on chemical additives, animal products, or sawdust. Yes, sawdust. That “hint of oak” or “woody undertone” doesn’t always come from oak barrels. Many winemakers add wood chips, staves, or sawdust to make wine taste like it was aged in an oak barrel - without being obligated to disclose it. Even when wine ages in oak barrels, this process adds gluten when the wheat paste (a mixture of flour and water) used to seal the barrels seeps into the wine. Instead, Smartvine is aged in environmentally friendly stainless steel barrels, making it one of the few gluten-free wines on the market. 

Low Sugar

Some wines contain up to 130 grams of sugar per glass, over three times the amount of a can of soda. While some sugars are naturally occurring, others are added during the winemaking process to alter the alcohol level or change the taste. Instead of taking shortcuts, Smartvine grapes are grown in only one vineyard. They are harvested under the watchful eye of an award-winning winemaker to ensure they’re picked at just the right time - ensuring a delicious wine that tastes great with no added sugar. At just 1 gram/liter of sugar per bottle, Smartvine has less sugar than any other brand of wine.
