What happened to iTunes?

Dec 04, 2019

I bet by now you've heard from the media about how iTunes is "going away". While this is true, it's important for you as a fitness professional to understand what that really means to your precious music library. I realize this can be confusing so I will do my best to explain to you below some important information.

Are you ready? Grab your kid or some other tech-savvy geek in your household and read below...

iTunes is a software program that was pre-loaded onto every Mac for decades. So beginning with the operating system called macOS Catalina, iTunes will no longer be pre-loaded on any Apple branded desktop/laptop computers. Instead, all your music will played through the "Apple Music" app AND your movies will be accessible from the AppleTV app, your books from the Apple Books app and your podcasts from the Apple Podcast app.

Basically Apple has decided to separate out all the various media file formats into their own App.

The good news for you is that most desktop computers are so old anyway, you may not be able to upgrade to the new macOS Catalina, so this likely won't affect you! If you haven't updated your desktop to macOS Catalina, iTunes will still function as it did and you can sync your device the same way it's always been done. Yipppeee!

If, however, you have upgraded to macOS Catalina or have a brand new computer where it's pre-loaded, iTunes will not be on there. Instead, your music will appear in the Apple Music app. Also, if you load a Muscle Mixes CD into your computer, Apple Music will open and recognize it. You will import the CD into Apple Music and then sync to your device. It's the same process, just a different app that holds the music.

For PC desktop computers, the iTunes software has never been pre-loaded. So as far as we've heard, the iTunes app is still available for download as before.

OK now let's talk mobile. Often times, our iPhones/iPads upgrade to the latest operating system almost automatically. So it is possible you did upgrade your phone and iPad to the newest OS. But no worries, the iTunes Store app still exists if you wish to purchase music downloads and just like the desktop, the replacement app for music is going to be Apple Music.

Bottom-line: Your music, TV shows, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks will transfer automatically to the Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books apps where you’ll still have access to your favorite iTunes features, including purchases, rentals, and imports.

***NOTE***
If you still sync your mobile device to your desktop, you may need to download and install an iTunes update, on your desktop, to get it to work with your iPhone if the new OS was installed. h

Here is an article from the APPLE site that explains what is happening:
