As fitness facilities everywhere prepare to reopen, almost everyone has plans for some sort of phased approach to protect their staff and members from COVID-19. Group training in particular presents unique challenges when it comes to keeping your people safe. Yet there are steps you can take to minimize risk to everyone involved and let your participants know you’re thinking of their wellbeing first. Armed with right knowledge, you can once again offer the inspiring experience of group training with confidence.

To begin, the number of participants is a key factor in acceptance and involvement. Most local authorities suggest starting with groups no larger than 10 individuals, which is a common size for small group training (SGT) classes and thus supports being able to bring back SGT during one of the earliest phases of reopening. However, the spacing of individuals and the ability to sanitize equipment will be paramount as you plan how classes will flow.

You may also need to restructure classes and potentially reduce the number of participants based on space to ensure a minimum of six feet between members at all times. Eric Gorder, Fitness Director at Green Bay YMCA, says he will be more precise when planning stations. “Instead of having participants move in a traditional circuit, they will stay in their ‘zone,’ which will only allow them to use equipment they have touched.”
